Teeth Whitening Q&A

What is teeth whitening?

In-office teeth whitening is a quick and simple way to enhance the overall appearance of your smile. Teeth whitening is an effective way to remove years worth of stains from your teeth.

Although daily brushing and flossing are essential to maintaining a healthy smile, your teeth can take on a dull, discolored appearance over time. In addition to certain drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine, age, and certain medications can also impact the brightness of your smile.

Tobacco use is another major contributor to stained, yellowish teeth.

Teeth whitening is a treatment that uses peroxide-based whitening agents to lift stains and brighten the appearance of your teeth.

What happens during the teeth whitening procedure?

Before the procedure, Dr. Robin and his team perform a thorough dental exam to check for underlying issues like cavities or gum disease. If you suffer from an underlying problem with your oral health, it’s best to receive treatment before whitening your teeth.

After your exam, Dr. Robin uses a rubber shield to protect your gums. He then applies a whitening gel to your teeth and lets it sit for up to 30 minutes. Depending on your desired results, Dr. Robin may apply multiple layers of the whitening gel.

In some cases, Dr. Robin may use a specialized light to enhance the whitening gel’s effectiveness.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is a very safe procedure. Although some people may experience minor tooth sensitivity, the peroxide-based whitening gel causes no long-term damage to your teeth or gums.

Teeth whitening offers you an easy and effective way to enhance the appearance of your smile. Dr. Robin completes most treatments in about an hour. After the procedure, you can return to your regular routine and care for your teeth as usual.

Although teeth whitening is a popular treatment, it isn’t effective on all types of discoloration. Teeth whitening does not affect crowns, veneers or composite fillings, or those discolored by medication or injury.
